- Details of Disappearance:
- In June 1978, Grace Reapp and her young daughter Gracie vanished from their Vermont home. Grace allegedly left a note saying they were leaving, but nobody heard from them again. Five days later, Grace’s husband, Michael, reported them missing, then filed for divorce, claiming Grace deserted him and was intolerable. This was unusual, as Grace’s family said she would never abandon her two sons.
Michael had been having an affair and admitted to past infidelity and possible physical abuse of Grace. He claimed Grace left willingly, possibly because she was also having an affair. He later married their babysitter.
The case was reopened in 1987, and extensive searches of the Reapps’ property turned up nothing. In 1996, the case was reclassified as a double homicide. After one of Grace’s sons died, Michael was interviewed but maintained his innocence. Then, he mysteriously disappeared in 1996, leaving only his toothbrush and cigarettes.
In 2006, Michael was charged with murder. Police believed he killed Grace because of his affair and Gracie because she witnessed it. He remained a fugitive until 2010 when he was identified as a John Doe who had shot himself during a police chase in 1997. His body had been unidentified for over thirteen years.
Police suspect Grace and Gracie’s bodies are buried on the former property and continue to search, having dug over 25 times since 1996.
