Details of Disappearance:
On November 4, 1995, Smith and his girlfriend, Margie Boone, disappeared from Smith’s home in Sanford, North Carolina. Police found blood in the house, which looked like it had been robbed.

Five days later, Donald Abercrombie had a long standoff with police in Fayetteville. He eventually gave up and was arrested. His DNA was found at Smith’s house.

Abercrombie confessed to killing Smith and Boone, saying he buried them in the woods near his home in Spring Lake. He was convicted of two counts of murder and robbery in 1997 and sentenced to life in prison. Although the prosecution wanted the death penalty, he got two life sentences instead. His family said he had a troubled past, including child abuse and the death of his father.

Importantly, the bodies of Smith and Boone have never been found.
