- Details of Disappearance:
- Hugh and his wife Dian, known as “the Dog Lady,” had a rocky marriage in Morro Bay during the early 1980s. Hugh was a fisherman. Dian was found murdered – strangled with a dog leash – four years later. Hugh identified her body. He never reported her missing, claiming she’d disappeared before. Police questioned him but didn’t charge him.
Four years after Dian’s death, Hugh disappeared. He borrowed tools, did a job in San Simeon, and was last seen around 1:30 pm. His truck was found abandoned in Cambria – his belongings were inside, but he was gone. The fuel line was cut.
Some think Hugh faked his own disappearance because he knew something about Dian’s murder. Others believe he was killed, maybe by the same person who killed Dian. The case remains a mystery.
