- On July 18, 1983, real estate agent Gabriel disappeared after leaving to meet a client near Lake Norman, North Carolina. Two days later, her car was found abandoned with a broken window. Seven months after that, some of her belongings—clothes, purse, and keys—were discovered in the woods nearby. A man, Johnny Joseph Head, was convicted of her murder in 1985, even though her body was never found. Police believe Head killed her, but he always claimed he was innocent. He spent 16 years in prison before being released in 2001. The case remains unsolved, and police are still searching for Gabriel’s remains.
