- Barnett disappeared in Birmingham, Alabama on June 3, 1995. He went out after borrowing his girlfriend’s car, saying he’d meet someone. He didn’t return, and his friends couldn’t reach him. Days later, his girlfriend’s car was found abandoned.
Fifteen years later, in 2015, Tricia Abney, an exotic dancer who worked at Sammy’s in 1995, was charged with his murder. Police believe Abney and her boyfriend, Jeff Martin, lured Barnett to Abney’s apartment to rob him. The robbery turned deadly; they stabbed him, dismembered his body, and buried the remains in Bibb County.
Abney’s brother confessed in 2015, revealing he’d helped dispose of the body. He felt guilty and came forward. Martin killed himself the day Abney was arrested. Abney admitted to being involved in the murder but blamed Martin. She was convicted of felony murder in 2017 and is serving a life sentence without parole.
Although Abney’s brother described where the remains were buried, police haven’t found them. The case is considered a homicide because of the suspicious circumstances surrounding Barnett’s disappearance.
