Details of Disappearance:
On June 2, 1971, 3-year-old Douglas disappeared from his family’s home in Alfred, Maine. He was playing in a sandbox near his mobile home when his mom, who was on the phone, looked up and he was gone.

The area is rural and very hard to search, with lots of woods and swamps. A huge search with many people didn’t find him. At first, police thought he wandered off and got lost, but because he was never found, that’s now unlikely.

Police dogs followed his scent for a while, but it ended at a road. His dad, who was a part-time police officer, thinks Douglas might have been put into a car there. It’s strange that the family dog didn’t bark.

The case was looked at again in 1993. Douglas’s parents are divorced now, and his mom moved to New York. The police know the family wasn’t involved. His dad thinks a local sex offender who has since died kidnapped and killed Douglas. The mystery of what happened to Douglas remains unsolved.
