- On February 15, 1962, a soldier named Winget disappeared during military training at Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) in Washington state. He was practicing crossing a thin rope bridge just six feet above the Nisqually River. Soldiers were supposed to clip their belts to the rope for safety, but Winget fell in when he lost his grip and his belt came undone. Although his fellow soldiers tried to save him, the current swept him away past a safety line, and he was never found. It’s believed he drowned.
