- On August 27, 1993, Dunckel left his home in Lowville, New York, early in the morning. He was going camping and had all his gear in his car. The next day, his car was found empty at the end of Steam Mill Road in the Adirondack mountains near Brantingham, New York. Dunckel was gone, and no one has seen or heard from him since.
