Details of Disappearance:
In April 2000, Apke disappeared. He lived with his parents in Florence, Kentucky. He’d had some trouble in the past: a drunk driving conviction in 1998 (his license was reinstated in March 2000), and some bounced checks in 1997 (paid off by April 2000). He’d also recently broken up with his girlfriend. However, his family said he seemed positive about the future; he had a new job installing garage doors, was planning to quit smoking, and didn’t seem affected by these setbacks.

On April 7th, Apke went out to play pool with friends, promising to be home by 10 pm for work the next day. He called home twice, the last time around 11 pm, saying he’d be late. That was the last time his family saw him. They weren’t initially worried because he sometimes left without telling anyone.

His employer called on April 9th, concerned that Apke hadn’t shown up for work. It turned out Apke had been at Strasse Haus bar in Covington, celebrating getting his driver’s license back. He was drinking heavily, possibly also taking Valium, according to his ex-girlfriend and a private investigator.

Around 2:30 am on April 10th, Apke left the bar in his grandmother’s silver 1974 Chrysler Newport. An hour later, the car was found wrecked on an Interstate 275 bridge in Boone County, heading towards Indiana. Apke was gone. There was a steep drop to the water below, but no evidence he’d jumped.

A witness said someone from the wrecked car got into a Jeep Cherokee. Police don’t know if Apke left voluntarily, maybe fearing trouble after the accident, or if something else happened. The possibility of foul play hasn’t been ruled out. He never picked up his last paycheck. He also had experience working as a cook. His disappearance remains a mystery.
