- Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian male. Brown hair, gray eyes. Maupin has a scar on his right thigh. The tip of his right little finger was severed and reattached, with resulting scarring.
- Details of Disappearance:
- James Maupin vanished near his workplace in Lejunior, Kentucky on June 18, 1985. He owned coal and water processing companies. He traveled often for work, sometimes staying in a trailer at a mine. He disappeared completely and was later declared legally dead.
Police suspected Ernest Lee Hensley, the last person to see Maupin. Hensley was charged with murder in 2010, as police believed he shot Maupin at a coal mine and disposed of the body outside of Harlan County. They think finding the body is unlikely. However, the case against Hensley was dropped in 2013 due to missing witnesses. The charges could be reinstated if new evidence is found.
Maupin left behind two young children. His disappearance is considered suspicious.
