Details of Disappearance:

In 1998, a college senior named Nemoto was studying psychology at Michigan State University. She decided not to go back to school because she wanted a career in clinical psychology, not research, which she thought her degree would only lead to.

Around June, she sold most of her belongings and gave away Japanese keepsakes to a friend. Before leaving for Japan on June 3rd, she had dinner with her friend and her husband. She had gotten a lower grade than expected in a class, which upset her and may have contributed to her leaving school even though she was almost finished.

Instead of going home to Japan, she flew to Anchorage, Alaska. She visited Denali National Park, then went back to Anchorage and stayed in a hostel. She then traveled to Wasilla, Alaska. She bought tickets for a train and ferry to other Alaskan towns, but it’s unknown if she actually reached her destinations.

Nemoto never contacted her family and has disappeared. Her friend thought maybe she was trying to escape her life in Japan. The mystery of what happened to her remains unsolved.
