Details of Disappearance:
On April 8, 2008, Ashley Fraley disappeared from her Gastonia, North Carolina apartment. She’d been sick with the stomach flu and had visited the hospital twice the day before. She called her mom around midnight, still feeling ill, and then called a friend at 1:30 am saying someone was taking her back to the hospital. That was the last anyone heard from her.

She left her purse, wallet, and keys at home. Two days later, her phone was found three miles away. Calls were made from it around 4:30 am on the day she disappeared, but they weren’t related to her case. The phone was handled by too many people before police got it to be useful as evidence.

Her fiancé’s father, Ricky Dale Simonds Sr., is a person of interest. Simonds was a maintenance worker at Fraley’s apartment complex, lived nearby, and was one of the last to see her. He drove her to the hospital earlier that night. He refused a lie detector test and had a criminal history, including manslaughter. Simonds later died mysteriously himself – found dead in the trunk of his ex-girlfriend’s car.

A convicted murderer, Jerry Douglas Case, confessed to Fraley’s murder in 2015. However, he was in prison at the time of her disappearance, so police don’t believe his confession.

Fraley was a student and wanted to become a drug counselor. Police don’t think she left on her own because she had no car or license and never left without telling anyone. Her fiancé was in jail at the time and isn’t suspected.

The case remains unsolved due to a lack of evidence.
