- Details of Disappearance:
- Callies disappeared on November 15, 1978, after leaving a bar called the Sandbar near Interstate 80 in Grand Island, Nebraska. She called her daughter at 7:30 pm to make dinner plans, left the bar at 8:30 pm to pick her daughter up, but never arrived. Her ex-husband reported her missing six days later. Her car, a red and white or red and beige 1975 Dodge Dart (license plate 8C4696), is also gone.
In 1984, serial killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to killing Callies, saying he and his accomplice, Ottis Toole, strangled her and buried her somewhere between Grand Island and the South Dakota border. He claimed they may have driven her car to Canada and sold it. Lucas knew details about Callies’ life, like the fact she had three children.
However, there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Lucas and Toole, and both are now dead. Lucas confessed to hundreds of murders, but many were false confessions, so it’s unclear how many he actually committed. He’s also a suspect in other unsolved disappearances.
