- Details of Disappearance:
- On August 14, 1986, 15-year-old Jeremy went to the Coos County Fair in Oregon with his 9-year-old sister and friends. They agreed to meet by the Ferris wheel at 5:00 PM, but Jeremy never showed up. He’s been missing ever since.
Jeremy lived in Grants Pass but grew up nearby in Myrtle Point. He left his wallet, keys, and a new watch at home that day. He called his mom earlier that day, and the call seemed normal. There were some reported sightings after his disappearance, but none were confirmed.
Rumors spread about his death—accidental shooting, drowning, or a drug overdose—but none were proven. The sheriff believes Jeremy died that day. Police don’t think he ran away; he was close to his sister and left important things behind. His parents were divorcing, and his grades had slipped, but he was generally a popular and well-liked kid.
Terry Lee Steinhoff, Jeremy’s former babysitter, is a key person in this case. Witnesses saw Jeremy with him in a truck that night. Steinhoff was uncooperative with the investigation and later murdered a woman in 1988. He died in prison in 2007.
Because of the lack of evidence, Jeremy’s case is considered a possible homicide and non-family abduction. His family believes he’s dead and held a memorial service in 2011. His mother thinks his body is in Coos County. The case remains unsolved.
