- Baby Jersey and her mom, Mindy, disappeared in Michigan in August 2002. The state had taken Jersey away from Mindy soon after she was born because Mindy had mental health problems, used drugs, and neglected Jersey. Mindy was working to get Jersey back, living with her parents and going to therapy. She was visiting Jersey regularly.
One evening, Mindy’s sister left Mindy and Jersey alone while she went to dinner. When she returned, they were both gone. Mindy’s car was found later on the Mackinac Bridge, about 200 feet above the water. It looked like she’d driven back and forth on the bridge before parking it. A witness saw a woman near the car, and an hour later, the car was empty but Jersey’s car seat, Mindy’s purse, keys, diaper bag, and a baby bottle were all inside.
Police think Mindy jumped off the bridge with Jersey. Mindy had a history of suicidal thoughts and had even threatened to harm herself and her daughter. Despite a big search, neither Mindy nor Jersey were ever found.
