- Details of Disappearance:
- In July 1981, Haynes moved from San Francisco to Boulder, Colorado, for college. He arrived on July 22nd, called his dad for money on the 23rd, and a friend on the 24th. Then, he vanished.
On July 26th, his beige 1981 Subaru (California plates 1CPK205) was found abandoned near Nederland, Colorado, with the windows down in the rain. Because no one reported him missing until August 10th, police didn’t investigate right away, and the car disappeared.
A hitchhiker Haynes picked up said Haynes planned to buy marijuana in Boulder. This led to theories that he got involved with drug dealers or joined a cult, but there’s no proof.
Haynes’s father tried to have him declared legally dead in 1982, and it was granted in 1983. His sister still searches for him. A reported use of his Social Security number in the 1990s was a mistake.
Some family believe he faked his disappearance; others think something bad happened to him. The mystery remains unsolved.
