- Details of Disappearance:
- Judith Ruggirello vanished from Southfield, Michigan on August 18, 1968. The night before, she argued with her husband, Antonino “Tony” Ruggirello Jr., after telling him she was leaving him and getting an apartment. He threatened her.
The next day, Tony sent their sons away. Judith was never seen again. Her home was messy – unusual for her – and her red convertible was found abandoned 12 hours later behind a burned-down Detroit restaurant, Darby’s. The car was damaged, wiped clean of fingerprints, but her purse was inside. Important keys were missing, but the purse held a receipt for a $20 apartment deposit.
Judith had been seeing another man, and argued with Tony about it, but it’s unclear if she was having an affair. The other man cooperated with police and was cleared. Judith had told friends she was leaving Tony and considering getting a gun.
Tony was a suspected mobster, nicknamed “Tony the Exterminator,” with Mafia connections through his pest control business. Tips suggested Judith’s body may have been destroyed in an auto wrecking yard or incinerated at a sanitation service run by a Mafia boss. Years later, Tony and his brothers were convicted of Mafia-related crimes, including attempted murder. Though he’s still alive and a prime suspect in Judith’s disappearance, no one has ever been charged. It’s believed she might have been killed because she knew about Tony’s criminal activities. The case remains unsolved.
