They searched for her, but couldn’t find her. They then walked a mile and a half to call the police, about an hour after Katie disappeared. Searches found Katie’s diaper bag and bottle, and dogs sensed a body downstream, but Katie and her car seat were never found.

People questioned the parents’ story because it didn’t seem consistent. Johnnie even took a lie detector test. Eventually, almost a year later, both parents were charged with causing Katie’s death (manslaughter), possessing marijuana, hiding evidence, and leaving the scene of an accident.

They pleaded guilty to lesser charges and were each sentenced to five years in prison. Katie has never been found.
