- On October 9, 1984, 25-year-old Debra Leggett vanished from her job at a cotton gin in Mercedes, Texas. She was a secretary at the gin, owned by her father-in-law.
Around 4:30 pm, she was seen talking to two men near her car. A short time later, she was gone. Police have sketches of the two men.
Her parents received ransom calls at 4:45 pm demanding $250,000. They found her car at the gin, with her purse and keys inside, but Debra was missing. Her work was left unfinished – her textbooks and calculator were on her desk.
A ransom note was later mailed, seemingly written by Debra but in an envelope addressed by someone else.
Investigators looked into several possibilities, including her stepfather’s possible involvement in a smuggling operation (though no evidence supported this theory) and her husband (who cooperated with police and divorced after her disappearance).
Police believe Debra was murdered, but despite the ransom note and several leads, her case remains unsolved, leaving her husband and young son without answers.
