- Lesley Herring vanished from her Los Angeles apartment on February 8, 2009. Her husband, Lyle, said they argued, he went to sleep, and she was gone when he woke up. Everything she owned – her car, purse, phone, even valuable jewelry – was left behind, along with $26,000 in her bank account. This was very unusual for Lesley, a responsible woman who never disappeared without telling anyone.
Lyle didn’t report her missing; her sister, a TV actress, did after Lesley’s employer noticed her absence. Lyle himself disappeared for two weeks, reappearing at the US-Mexico border with his dreadlocks cut off. He claimed a Mexican gang did it because he owed them money and that he’d gone to Mexico looking for Lesley, claiming they’d planned a trip there. Lesley’s family knew nothing about this trip.
Police suspected Lyle from the start. In 2010, he was charged with Lesley’s murder. Even though he claimed innocence and his lawyer argued there was no proof Lesley was dead, he was found guilty of second-degree murder in 2013 and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Because Lesley left behind all her belongings and was a responsible person, investigators believed she was likely the victim of foul play.
