- On August 21, 1999, Maria Anguiano disappeared. The last time anyone saw her was at a laundromat in her apartment building in Los Banos, California, around 10:30 or 10:45 pm.
A neighbor saw her arguing with her ex-boyfriend, Adolfo Martinez, the father of her two young children. The argument was intense and lasted almost an hour. Anguiano left her laundry and sleeping children in her apartment and vanished.
Martinez had a history of abusing Anguiano. Even after they broke up, he threatened and sometimes hurt her. He also resented having to pay her $440 a month in child support, even though DNA tests proved he was the father.
Police found Martinez had lied about his whereabouts the night Anguiano disappeared. They charged him with kidnapping and murder, even without finding her body. He was convicted of second-degree murder and false imprisonment in 2000 and sentenced to 18 years to life in prison. His appeal failed.
To this day, Maria Anguiano is still missing.
