- Details of Disappearance:
- Lynne, a college freshman, vanished from Middlebury College in Vermont on December 10, 1971. It was the first day of finals, and she was seen buying prunes, then heading to a bus to New York (the bus had left). She returned to campus, saying she’d forgotten her pen before her 1 p.m. English exam, but never arrived. The last confirmed sighting was at 2:15 p.m. She left all her belongings behind except maybe $30.
While she’d joked about faking her death, her friends and family didn’t believe she’d actually do it. She was a good student, though not her best academically. Although there were later possible sightings and false confessions, nothing panned out. Her disappearance is suspicious, and her family thinks she died soon after.
Years later, Robert Durst, whose wife owned the health food store Lynne visited, became a person of interest. Durst has a history of suspicious disappearances and violence connected to his life, including the disappearance of his own wife and a murder conviction (though acquitted). He’s been investigated for other disappearances, too, but he’s never been charged in connection with Lynne’s case. The case remains unsolved.
