Details of Disappearance:

Margarette disappeared from her Arlington, Texas home on October 11, 2001. She was a high school senior. Her adoptive father, Gabriel, initially reported her as a runaway. However, police later suspected foul play.

Gabriel claimed that the Mexican Mafia kidnapped Margarette and demanded ransom, but investigators didn’t believe him. He also said he received emails from her from Mexico, including one with a photo of her, but these were proven to be fake and sent from Gabriel’s own work computer. He worked as a fraud investigator, ironically.

Margarette’s uncle had a video recording of Margarette accusing her father of abuse. Gabriel denied this, claiming she lied. He also claimed to have recorded phone calls with Margarette after her disappearance, but police found no such recordings.

Gabriel was arrested for possibly kidnapping Margarette, then later for embezzlement from his bank job (a separate crime). He was eventually convicted of theft and evidence tampering. The kidnapping charge was dropped as part of a plea deal. Though the police searched his old house in 2006, Margarette was never found. Her case remains unsolved. Her father is in prison.
