Mullaney has a tattoo of a flaming shamrock at the center of his upper back; a drawing of the tattoo is posted with this case summary. He has a mole on his left thigh and surgical scars on his left ankle from pin insertion. Mullaney’s ears are pierced, but he was not wearing earrings at the time of his disappearance. His nickname is Matt. Mullaney may now have a beard and/or mustache.

Details of Disappearance:

In 2003, an American college student named Mullaney went to Florence, Italy, to study art. He was last seen leaving an Irish pub around 2:30 AM on February 1st, 2003. He seemed fine and wasn’t drunk. It was very unusual for him to disappear without contacting his family, as he’d been keeping in touch regularly before.

Since then, there have been several possible sightings:

* **April 5, 2003:** A witness on a train in England said they talked to someone who looked like Mullaney, who mentioned going to Dublin for a job.
* **July 23, 2003:** Another witness saw someone who looked like him on a ferry to Dublin, acting nervous around immigration officials.
* **January 3, 2004:** Some people in Galway, Ireland, reported seeing him.
* **February 1, 2004:** A man resembling Mullaney, looking very ill and claiming to be English, was seen in Bologna, Italy. This sighting has never been confirmed.

Mullaney left his passport at his apartment but had his wallet with him. He hasn’t used his phone or credit cards since his disappearance. Police in Ireland and the Netherlands are investigating, but the case remains unsolved. The Charley Project, a US organization, is also involved because he’s an American citizen.
