- Details of Disappearance:
- In December 1976, a man named Stone disappeared from Lubbock, Texas. He was last seen at a bar on December 30th. His apartment was left untouched, with all his belongings, including his paycheck and medicine, still inside.
His car, a yellow 1973 Pontiac, was found abandoned the next day and impounded. The drunk driver, Victor Briones, was arrested. Later that day, Stone’s wallet was found and turned into the police.
Stone’s parents reported him missing on January 7th, unaware that his wallet had been recovered. Police investigated and found Briones had been arrested for stealing Stone’s car. Briones claimed he and his friend, Felix Ybarra Jr., last saw Stone walking down a deserted road. Ybarra was arrested in Nebraska.
Both men were charged with aggravated robbery. They gave conflicting accounts of what happened to Stone, both claiming the other stabbed him. One said Stone’s head was held underwater; the other said he was stabbed twice in the ribs. Stone’s watch was also stolen and later recovered from Ybarra’s father-in-law.
Police suspected murder, but Stone’s body was never found. The outcome of the robbery case is unknown, and it’s unclear if the men were ever charged with murder. Stone was close to his parents and planned to move to Dallas for health reasons. His disappearance is considered suspicious.
