- In February 1985, Nathan Schlatter disappeared from Tulsa, Oklahoma, along with his mother, Terri. His parents, Terri and Darrell, were having marital problems and were accused of bank fraud. Terri initially sent Nathan to live with his grandparents in Indiana but later brought him back to Tulsa.
The day after she got Nathan back, Terri made a phone call to her mother about his medicine; it was the last time anyone heard from her. Later that month, Darrell picked Nathan up from a babysitter and never returned him, disappearing with Terri. Although Terri had run away from Darrell before, this time he didn’t seem to look for her.
Because Terri was a fugitive from the bank fraud charges, police focused on finding her rather than treating her disappearance as a missing person case.
Years later, in 1993, Darrell was arrested for murdering his girlfriend. Police reopened the investigation into Terri and Nathan’s disappearance, even searching a pond, but found nothing. Darrell then killed himself in jail.
Terri and Nathan have never been found, and their Social Security numbers haven’t been used since 1985. Police suspect they were victims of foul play. The case remains unsolved.
