- Details of Disappearance:
- Pamela Butler vanished on February 12, 2009, after last being seen with her boyfriend, Jose, at her Washington D.C. home. The next day, she sent emails to work and a family member, then disappeared.
Her house was very secure, with an alarm system and cameras, and she was meticulous about keeping it tidy. However, when her brother checked the house after her disappearance, things were out of place: bedsheets were missing, the comforter was on a sofa, files were scattered, and a window blind was up—something she never did. This window was also unlocked, and the alarm was off, despite her always setting it. Her cars were still there, but her purse, cards, and keys were gone.
Jose said Pamela broke up with him on February 13th, a sudden but seemingly amicable split. Security footage shows him leaving her house late that night and returning several times afterward to collect belongings. However, the footage never shows Pamela leaving.
Jose initially cooperated with police, but then refused a lie detector test and stopped cooperating. He had a minor criminal history. Pamela’s family said the couple seemed happy, with only minor disagreements.
Years later, in 2017, Jose was charged with Pamela’s murder. Investigators found evidence of past domestic violence in his history. Importantly, Jose’s first wife also disappeared under suspicious circumstances in 1989, having previously accused him of abuse. Police initially closed that case, believing they’d contacted her in Florida, but it turned out they’d spoken to someone else impersonating her. In 2018, his first wife’s body was finally identified.
Jose pleaded guilty to Pamela’s murder and was sentenced to 12 years. He led police to where he’d disposed of her body, but the area was paved over. He was later also convicted of murdering his first wife and received an additional 40-year sentence.
Pamela was a successful professional with a good job and investments, but was stressed about recent financial losses. Her orderly life and close family ties make her disappearance highly unusual, leading investigators to strongly suspect foul play.
