Details of Disappearance:
Perry and his friend Austin went on a fishing trip on July 24, 2015, in Austin’s boat. Both boys were experienced boaters. They texted their parents in the morning, bought gas around 1:30 p.m., and sent a final, alarming text (“we’re f**ked”) later that day. A strong storm hit them, and they never came home.

Their boat was spotted several times over the next year and a half, drifting hundreds of miles away. It was finally recovered in 2017, off the coast of Bermuda. The boat’s engine was off, and while some things were found (Austin’s phone and fishing gear), other important items like life jackets were missing. The phone was too damaged to recover any information.

Florida investigated Austin’s family for possible neglect, focusing on Austin’s stepfather. Although there was probable cause to charge him, no charges were filed. Perry’s mother sued Austin’s family for wrongful death because Perry wasn’t supposed to go fishing without an adult, a fact Austin’s family knew.

Neither boy’s body was ever found, and both are presumed to have died at sea. The families, once friends, were deeply divided by the tragedy.
