- An Israeli tourist named Mesika vanished in Houston, Texas in May 2003. A year later, Jonathan Vernier, a prison escapee, was arrested for his murder. Police think Mesika gave Vernier a ride, and Vernier robbed and killed him. Vernier admitted to killing Mesika at his trial in 2008, but claimed it was self-defense during a fight. He was found guilty and led police to Mesika’s remains in Louisiana. Scientists still need to confirm it’s Mesika through DNA testing.
