Details of Disappearance:
Renee Pernice vanished from her Kansas City home on January 2, 2009, between 9 and 10 a.m. Her husband, Shon, said he was asleep in the basement and didn’t see her leave. This was unusual, as Renee was a dedicated nurse instructor and mother who wouldn’t normally disappear without a word. She left behind only her wallet and phone.

Three days later, her phone was found miles away, in an area unrelated to her life. Police searched the Pernice home and found evidence suggesting foul play: possible blood, acid-etched garage floor, and conflicting stories from Shon about when he last saw Renee. Shon had access to cleaning supplies at his fire station job (where he was later fired) and acted suspiciously after Renee disappeared, including visiting a casino with another woman and creating a dating profile.

Although Shon was questioned about a previous unrelated disappearance, he wasn’t charged. However, his behavior, combined with the evidence at the home and the mysterious circumstances of Renee’s disappearance, led police to believe Renee was dead.

Shon faced multiple arrests after Renee’s disappearance, including charges of theft and witness tampering. He was eventually charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2012, claiming he unintentionally killed Renee during an argument. He admitted to disposing of her body in a dumpster. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Renee’s sons were placed with their grandparents.
