- Details of Disappearance:
- Mark Hess disappeared in Brainerd, Minnesota on February 26, 2002. He was last seen near Oak and 8th Street, walking east-southeast. His family reported him missing two days later.
His apartment was untouched; he left behind his clothes, ID, and medicine. His bank accounts haven’t been used since February 2002.
Three months later, in May 2002, police found a jacket, pants, shoes, socks, and shirt near some railroad tracks east of Brainerd. These clothes matched Hess’s description. They were scattered along the tracks near a swampy area.
Investigators think Hess might have died from hypothermia (extreme cold). Hypothermia can make people confused and cause them to take off their clothes.
Police searched the area extensively, but the swampy land is so difficult to search that they may have missed his body. His family held a memorial service, but they still hope to find his remains someday.
