Details of Disappearance:
Hazelton disappeared from her Mississippi apartment in May 2004. She’d moved there with her abusive boyfriend, James Fannings Jr., and his friend, Chevaun Mack. Their relationship was troubled; Fannings was unfaithful, violent, and sometimes locked Hazelton in their room.

In May 2004, Hazelton called her parents in Pennsylvania, asking for money to leave Fannings. They sent it, but she never returned and stopped contacting them. When they couldn’t reach her, they reported her missing in December.

James Fannings was arrested for Hazelton’s murder in 2006. Chevaun Mack testified that he saw Fannings shoot Hazelton. They then put her body in a barrel, tried to burn it, and buried the remains. They even drove Hazelton’s car to Pennsylvania afterward.

Though much of the evidence against Fannings was circumstantial, Mack’s testimony was enough. Fannings was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was upheld on appeal. Hazelton’s body has never been found, and her family still hopes to recover her remains.
