- Details of Disappearance:
- On June 6, 1992, Stacy graduated high school and made plans with her friend Suzanne to go to Branson. They changed plans, and after a noise complaint at a friend’s house in Battlefield, Missouri, they went to Suzanne’s home in Springfield. They arrived around 2:15 am on June 7th.
That’s the last time anyone saw Stacy, Suzanne, or Suzanne’s mother, Sherrill. Their cars and belongings were all at the house, which showed no signs of a struggle, except for a broken porch light. Important evidence (broken glass) was accidentally thrown away. The crime scene was also possibly contaminated by many visitors who didn’t realize the situation’s seriousness right away.
A man named Robert Craig Cox, who had a criminal record but whose murder conviction was overturned, became a person of interest. He made conflicting statements, claiming to know what happened but that the bodies would never be found. He was never charged.
Several witnesses reported seeing a moss green Dodge van driven by a woman who looked like Suzanne. One witness heard a man’s voice telling the woman not to do anything stupid. Other sightings of the van occurred, but crucial details like the license plate were lost. There was a report of the three women at a steakhouse between 1 and 3 am, but it was never confirmed. Other witnesses heard screams and tires squealing, but nothing was found in that area.
The police investigated several potential suspects, including Sherrill’s son and Suzanne’s brother and ex-boyfriend, but they were cleared. An anonymous tip to “America’s Most Wanted” was cut off before investigators could gather more information. There were also accusations of police interference in the investigation. One theory was that the attacker(s) pretended to rescue the family dog to lure someone to the door.
Sherrill’s past, including her divorces and financial struggles, was investigated. She had recently moved to a smaller house with Suzanne, and was working as a successful hair stylist.
Despite extensive searches and investigations, Stacy, Suzanne, and Sherrill remain missing. Their case remains unsolved, and they were declared legally dead in 1997. A memorial bench was placed in their honor.
