- In 1988, a woman named Barrett bought a used scooter and traveled across the US, camping and staying with friends. She was living on her Social Security checks. By November, she was in Florida.
In early January 1989, she got money from an ATM and wrote to her sister, saying she was heading north in Florida. That was the last anyone heard from her.
Nine days later, her scooter was found wrecked near Sebring, Florida, with her belongings missing. There was no sign of her. Because she was known to be tough and had talked about dying in the woods if she got sick, police think she might have been robbed and killed, but her disappearance remains a mystery.
